This is the response I got from Conrad Johnson a few years ago when I checke with them about the same thing;
The CAV50 is not designed for 6550, KT88, KT66 and KT77 tubes.
I highly recommend you to use EL34 tubes in CAV50. Again, this amplifier is designed for EL34 tubes, not for 6550, KT88, KT66 and KT77 tubes. Sovtek EL34EH is my favorite.
