Parts for a distance-sensing auto-tonearm-lift?

Hey techies!
I'd like to build an autolift for my tonearm, to lift it at the end of a record.
As I envision it, a distance-sensing opto..something will sense the position of the arm, and control a solenoid that lifts the arm when the stylus is in the run-out groove.
What kind of opto-thingy should I look for? It needs to be sensitive to distances in the millimeters-range.
