Really portable would mean a class-D amp with switching supply. I don't know what models if any are worth buying, though. Peavey has the IPR 1600; it's cheap, but reviews are very mixed at Musiciansfriend. Some guys love them, others had them blow up, overheat, or thought they sounded weak when driving subs. A review from a verified buyer at Zzounds is negative: of two amps he bought, one was DOA, the other died 1/2 way through the second gig. There's an extensive thread at AVSforum (see link below), including input from a Peavey insider.
Maybe these are just problems with early production, or Behringer employees trying to sabotage sales of the Peavey amp until they can get a clone on the market. :) I suspect that 10 years from now, new analog power amps will be as hard to find as CRT TVs. On the bright side, subwoofer addicts will have enjoyed a windfall in cheap used amps as sound companies dump rackloads of old iron.
Just about any amp could accept an iPod or other source with appropriate cables. Get a 1/8 to RCA cable at the dollar store, and change the RCA plugs for XLR or 1/4", wired appropriately for an unbalanced source.
