...I do use Apple Lossless compression for the iPod Classic in my car as I can plainly hear the difference compared 256kbps AAC, in the car setup.

For the few tunes that I have on my iPhone, for use with headphones when I travel, I just use 256kbps AAC and it sounds very good and enjoyable. I can't see carrying extra gadgets like an outboard DAC / headphone amp, and more cables for portable use.
