and I wonder why there isn't any mention here of how pleasing music is when interpreted by brilliant choreography, by the physical representation of music through movement. The score of Adolphe Adam, though criticized by Wagner who was present on premiere night, is delightful (Wagner, reportedly, somewhat altered his criticism).
During the intermission, I wandered down to the orchestra pit and beheld the harpist busily working on tuning her harp: she said the Oregon winter weather was hell on the strings.
One thing is inarguable: live music is essential to the experience. I've attended other performances where budgetary considerations forced canned music and that effectively dampened a lot of energy.
