There is nothing better you can do with a $3k purchase of a speaker. It will require very good amplification, but will reward you well, still among the best speakers ever made, Definitely nothing like this quality below $30k new, $10k used. And even then, we are talking equaling at best, not really surpassing. If your output requirements are a little on the high side, then there is no real alternative to a large Apogee. Even with the foam deterioration, for which you should save up since it will eventually happen, it is a really a good value.

You can come close to an Apogee with a Tympani IV/IVa with a line array of 6 to 9 BG Neo8 drivers per side for midrange, but it will lack quite a bit of the big Apogee bass slam and extension. That said, the maggie tweeter is cleaner and more resolving so long as it is not too aged, and the Neo8 midrange is also more refined so long as you don't need output well beyond 110 db SPL at 1m, where the BG Neo8 array will start bottoming out, then compressing at higher volume, then outright distorting, While the Apogee mids will continue with clean output - though the Diva tweeter will likely screech at these levels.
