In the early 50's stereo won out over 3 channel (center) in '58 FM multiplex (clearly inferior)won over the other five designs by the FCC.By the '70's BetaMax was better than the winning JVC VHS,although Beta is used in pro TV studios.
There was some good wins for us consumers, I was in retail and sold the RCA Laser Disc Movies read with a stylus (awfull)Pioneer's Laser eventually won out.You mention DIVX,pushed by Circuit City.Good riddance!
I won't get into the whole '70's Quadrafonics disaster.
Today it would indeed be sad if the superior SACD was to loose to the Money Giants to give us another lesser fidelity group of products.
