just finished speaking with tech at dcs

Posted by chris e. on December 6, 2000 at 07:16:26:

I decided to answer my own question by calling dcs today and I had a nice talk with a techie. They are preparing to offer (this spring) an upgrade on the elgar/delius and 972/purcell (choose your combo) for DSD processing with a firewire connection. Once upgraded, the purcell will upsample cd's to DSD as well as the usual 192. Further, their transport (coming out at about the same time) will be DSD (but NOT dvd-a) and it will connect to the upgraded dcs units through a firewire connection. Pricing? He wouldn't commit to it but said that they are trying to make the transport to be in the range of the purcell/delius rather than 972/elgar territory.

Also, he suggested that the new delius/purcell units will be made available with the firewire connection as an option at the factory.

He also said that at a show in Hong Kong, they compared 192 and dsd off of the same master tape (recorded??he said but I don't recall) and there was a general preference for dsd. He cautioned that this may reflect the relative state of advancement of each approach at this point in time rather than absolute/forever differences.
