Enjoying my Monica2

Posted by anumber1 on August 23, 2006 at 16:32:04:

I am a vinyl guy. That has to be said right up front. I primarily listen to my TT but a few months ago a buddy brought over his Monica2 DAC. I liked it a lot in the brief time I was able to listen to it. It was enough that I decided that my CD collection would probably get used more often if I actually liked the sound of my digital setup.

So...

Yesterday my Monica2 board arrived and I built it into a Velleman Die cast project box, powered by a 12 volt Ni Cad cordless power tool battery until my SLA battery and charger arrive from an ebay purchase late last week.

This little DAC is *GREAT*!

I have been listening to it all day, it seems to be breaking in very nicely. Smooth, non-fatiguing and delicate come to mind.

I am using my Sony NS-755V SACD/DVD player for a transport. The Monica2 sounds much better than the Sony's DAC.

I like how the lowish output of the Monica2 DAC matches my phono cartridge's output so I don't have a LOUD surprise when I hit the mute switch also. Finally my ARC preamp's line stage has something to amplify instead of attenuate.

All in all a pretty cool gizmo for $150 shipped and an hours worth of rigging up...
