"Do reviewers contact other owners of mass-produced tested gear to get their experiences with said item? Just wondering."
Yes, in a way. There's this Asylum where folks with unhappy experiences will report on issues. There's AudioCircle.com and AudiogoN where folks will share experiences as owners. You also get to track what components folks don't hold to and which hardly ever show up used. There's dealer friends reviewers talk to especially about realibility and manufacturer's responsiveness to fixing things. Often we get turned on to review items by actual owners or fellow reviewers. All this falls under "due diligence" which we try to do to the best of our abilities. Nobody wants to wase their time on *known* losers or products that still have kinks to be worked out.
Precisely because DIY lacks this mechanism, the 5-owner rule came up as a way to "fill the gap" so to speak.
