Cable Quality vs. Placement

I'm switching over to a balanced system and was wondering if I have one set of cables that's "better" than another, should the better pair go between the amp and preamp or between the preamp and source? Also curious is anybody has balanced cables that they love in about the $600 range (new or used). Equipment is Ayre CD player and Preamp, Sanders Magtech Amp and Magnepan 3.7s.
