Maybe you don't need to do anything...

Don't be confused Leo. The most likely reason that the Signet replacement stylus costs more than the entire Grado Green cartridge is that the entire Signet cartridge itself costs more than the entire Grado Green cartridge. Cartridges range in price from as low as $20 to over $10,000 depending upon a number of factors. Signet cartridges are generally higher graded Audio Technica cartridges, and some of them can be quite acceptable at the price point you're considering. If you believe that there is any material wear on the Signet's stylus, then certainly look into replacing it or its stylus. However, this may not be the case since a reasonable setup will last for a couple thousand hours (they take a good 40 hours to just break in). Maybe you don't need to do anything... By all means if you do decide that a replacement cartridge is in order, be sure to look into the Ortofon cartridges in this price range as well.

A competent dealer should be able to check your stylus for wear by looking at it under about 50X magnification, and comparing what he sees to known stylus shapes. You should also check that the cartridge is aligned properly with the gauge/alignement tool that came with the turntable (If one didn't come with the turntable there are aftermarket alignement for sale at many dealers). A mis-aligned cartridge can be a much bigger problem than one with a little wear.

Kind Regards, Chris
