the fact that these audiophile records from the 50s and early 60s were not made for the ultra-revealing systems most audiophile listeners have today.

I'm seriously considering getting an amp with adjustable equalization and tone controls -- not a big investment considering I've put together a magnificent (IMHO) classical LP collection for almost no money.

Any suggestions? I don't need a lot of power.
