I'm going to throw in my two cents (probably worth half of that) and attack the cartridge. IMO, it just isn't that great. I've used many phonostages (Classe, Bryston, AT, the cheap built-ins in my HK integrated and in my Lloyd's receiver) and a few cartridges Ortofon OM5, OM10, OM20, Signet TK3E, Pickering 625 and 1200, Grado Gold.
IMO each of the phonostages had a different sound, but none that I would say were absolutely terrible. The thing that made each one sound better or worse was the cartridge. I would have to say the worst I have heard were the Signet and the Ortofon OM5. Even going from the OM5 to the OM10 is a huge jump (IMO).
I just set up a friend with a cheap AT phonostage from Needle Doctor, an entry level Dual table, and a Pickering cartridge. This setup was very cheap and sounds very decent.
It's the cartridge.
