hello John, thank you again, I am flattered!
What this thing will cost one day is not yet calculated, but I have stated elsewhere that it will be in the US$15k range. Even then I am not making big money of it. Too much delevelopment time went into it.
I ensure precision by what I call glueing strategies which requies a lot of tooling. This has to be paid once only, but gosh!! it has to be paid.
One exception: the cylindrical rail on which the slider is running, the stator of the air bearing. This thing has to be precision-ground to less than 1µm total aberration from straightness and cylindricity. I have found a manufacturer in Switzerland who yields µm precision with utter ease but has not experinece with "such big parts".
Biggest problem is my desire for a non-magnetic and non-corroding material which still is grindable to this precision.I doubt I will make a fortune with the tonearm; if the thing carries itself econmically, I am happy. One way of this tonearm to return its investment: it generated several follow-up projects and forced me to gather knowledge there, too. My whole thinking is an integral one. I am usually not fighting with the detail while ignoring all the rest; my strategies aim at improving the audio system as a whole.
May I give an example? The tonearm allows enough excursion for shellac records and it covers the whole VTA thing with ease and it allows quick and reproducable cartridge exchange. Prerequisite for Vinyl and Shellac playback on top-notch level.
Also pre-requisite is a TT with variable speed between 16 and 120 rpm (to cover all needs); I love subchassis designs but the subchassis has to have more than 100 kg mass an a platter should approach 50kg :-)
Also a prerequisite is a preamp with quickly exchangeable phono EQ and this shall not be limiting or deterioating sound quality. This preamp also shall drive several power amplifiers without needing the help of an active crossover.
The poweramps shall behave like a XO themselves and limit the bandwidth of the signal they are feeding into the speakers.
For a 3-way speaker system, I have managed to come down to one coupling capacitor (sorry, I don't like what couling caps do, even the best) for each way in the whole signal path inclusing "speaker XO".Yes, admitted, for having only one coupling cap in the signal path, I had to use more than one signal transformator. My decision as a designer, I prefer their sonic footprint although I know that caps are way more ideal components AFA theory and measuring is concerned.
Phew, signal transformers, how utterly politically incorrect! Snort :-)
I am disgressing, ... I'm afraid I will have to get on my own feet much earlier than planned and I hope I will make it.
Cordial greets,
Bernhard
