Olly,
I still use cork/foam spotmats.However I've been using them for years now with a hard mat atop of them.I started with the top-half of a SOTA acrylic/sorbothane two-piece(the acrylic part).Then I got a Boston Audio carbon graphite 'Mat1'.Now I use the Boston Audio 'Mat 2'.

To reiterate;I use(used)these mats atop the cork/foam spotmat.
