Assuming it's a DD, the moment of inertia of the platter is part of the feedback loop for the speed control. If you add mass and increase the moment of inertia you slow down the feedback loop. This probably won't cause any great catastrophe but the reduction in speed stability may well be audible. It is possible to overload the loop so that the table won't even start, you'll quickly find out if you've done that.Take home message: DD tables are complex integrated systems. Fiddling with them is best left to experts and fools.
