Well, it's a common truism that musicians usually have crappy audio systems ; p . BTW, I've been playing in rhythm sections for quite some time. : )
A turntable can have perfect speed/pitch stability and still screw up the music's timing. The most common cause in my experience being resonant energy storage issues due to poor materials selection and an excessive reliance on crude mass-loading in an attempt to "isolate" the 'table from structure and air borne vibration.
For example, a low frequency note issuing from the speakers sets the 'table and/or support resonating; the note is gone, but the massive material stores the energy and continues to resonate, releasing the energy "slowly" back into the turntable; a device that measures microscopic vibrations.
This results in the bloating/smearing effects on the quality and duration (and space between) the notes that throw musical timing out of sync, render rhythms incoherently, and obfuscate the natural pacing and flow of the performence.
Rather than being drawn into the music, the listener is forced to subconsciously work the problem, leaving him or her distracted, fatigued, or emotionally distanced. The effects are subtle, but they've led many a music lover to an E ticket ride on the upgrade treadmill.
The irony is that audiophiles seldom notice, as they're usually too caught up in "watching" imaginary "soundstages" and listening to mechanical sound effects that have little or nothing to do with music.
