Did you ever try the Morch/Dyna combo on your friend's VPI system?
Likewise, I use Morch UP4/Dynavector Karat 17D3 (will get XV-1 one day, one day... :) and this combo (light and super fast and detailed) perfectly complements VPI decks.

While back I used to have Benz Macro Lo mounted on HW19 Mk3 and it sounded a bit soft. Benz was the main contributor of the softening, IMO.
Oh, good note on VPI decks support sensitivity. Wood or sandboxes can only suck the live and speed, at least in my experiance.

Did you try different cartridges in your setup? Perhaps Dynavector or Lyra would shift the balance toward your liking. Also, maybe you should try silver phono cable?
