...in theory you could set everything using the equations and a ruler to set effective length and a simple angle gauge or protractor to set the offset angle. I gave the example of the effective length as a way to quickly determine if the tonearm was indeed mounted in the wrong location for a given set of alignment null points.

Seems that most tonearm setup protractors include the means to end up with the correct effective length without having to measure it. But the relationship of the tonearm mounting point (pivot point) and the attachment position of the cartridge is critical to being able to align the stylus to a given set of null points. You could drive yourself crazy trying to align a cartridge to a certain set of null points if the tonearm mount was off and the headshell did not allow the cartridge to be positioned at the correct angle and attachment point (effective length).

I used to use a simple alignment protractor that Pro-Ject provides and found that if I first calculated the effective length and then set the stylus at that distance, it made the final adjustments in offset angle much simpler. Now I use the DB Systems protractor and it includes a quick way to find the correct effective length. I still use the Pro-Ject protractor for final adjustments since it has a nice fine line grid pattern that's better than the one provided with the DB Systems protractor
