I get bitten by my own carelessness. I try to work without having a large enough clean work area or without getting the proper tools. I rationalize that all that prep-work will make the job take twice as long.

FWIW, When it comes to electronics I always tell people to practice on old circuit boards. Get a nice iron with a small tip and cleaning sponge, mini needle-nose pliers, a solder sucker, and small diameter solder and carefully take parts out, clean up the pads, and put parts in. Eventually you get to the point where you can make a repair look like it came from the factory.
