Wow... such a deal. I popped into Goodwill today, and picked up one rather dirty and beat up Pioneer PL-518 Direct Drive TT, complete with strobe.
I simply plunked the thing down on the table, moved the entire headshell assembly from the other one (as this had none), grabbed my handy Enjoythemusic.com two point protractor (printed on cardstock) and aligned it, balanced the arm, set it to 2g, put the antiskate in the middle, plugged everything in, threw on my mint copy of Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good and dialed in the speed.
Man, does it sound nice!!
I upgraded from an old Realistic LAB-300 ($3.99/same Goodwill), which was good except for the fact that you could hear motor hum. Something I was planning to find a remedy for (me thinks some rubber pieces dried out).
Doing a quick Google showed that the 518 is really a good table. People especially liked the arm, etc.. I find this a little funny, considering a good slice of audiophiles consider DDs to be crap (along with negative feedback, anything associated with digital, etc...). FWIW, this thing has pretty low torque compared to a Technics SL-1200. I clocked it and the table takes almost 3 seconds to go from 0-33 1/3
