A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I'd seen a digital, laser, platter-speed tachometer on one of the audio mail-order sites. Cost-130.00. Seemed interesting, and even better, another inmate claimed that they're widely available. A few e-bay clicks later, and I'd ordered one-cost, about 30.00 including shipping.
The 'Nicety TC-802'. Cost includes carrying case and a good supply of reflective strips. The wrist strap should come in mighty handy for hauling over to fellow audiophiles homes.
I made a stand to raise the Nicety TC-802 to the correct height for my application.
Double-sided tape holds the Nicety TC-802 in place during performance runs.
I decided to add a SPST switch I had in the junk box to override the momentary 'test' switch. Makes it a lot handier for adjusting speed. The Nicety TC-802 in action. 59.90HZ on the SDS gives me the magic triple tres.
One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.
*Yes: Named 'Nicety TC-802'. Makes speed adjustment and checks much easier than with strobe, and you feel good-in fact, damned good and damned proud, seeing the speed on a digital display.
*No: Just because you see the speed on a digital display doesn't mean it's the correct speed (but checking my strobe, it's at least pretty damn close. The display has a capacity for 5 numerals, but only resolves to a tenth. A true audiophile version would eliminate speeds over 99rpm, and resolve to thousandths.
*Bottom line: I like it. Worth 30 dollars. Worth 130.00? Not for me, but that question is now officially moot.
Edit: And more to the point, can mankind learn to spell awesome?
