Hey all,

I see Sundazed has re-issued There's Is A Riot Goin On by Sly Stone. So, I pulled my original Epic copy to check it out.

This is one of those records that I haven't listened to in 10-15 years. Back when I bought the record, I was using drugs, so I am never really sure what I'll hear when I play one of these records today.

This took me back in an ugly way, but also reminded me about the truth that could be found.

Riot is 40 minutes of the meanest groove a junkie has ever put down. Sly is obviously blotto as he sings most of these songs, and damn if they are not brilliant. This is a one-off -- nobody could do this twice. This is a monster record.

His "Spaced Cowboy" must be the coolest thing a junkie has ever recorded. My god, he yodels (yes, yodels), with a deep funk track behind him. George Clinton: go screw yourself.

Then, he takes his own perfectly pleasant hit "Thank you for for letting me be myself," and turns it into the pissed-off bone-crusher: "Thank you for talking to me africa"

This record is mean, slurring and, well, true.

Is there a better funk record? If so, let me know.

best to all
