I don't know about the rest of the country but out here in Ca I can by an 8 foot bnu 1" thick granite counter top for $60. I have considered using one in a constrained layer slab. You have to do some cutting but I have diamond saws. I went to surface plates some time back. I use two, one for my TT and one for the motor. The TT mouint is 18x24 and the motor mount is 12x18. The little one can be shipped by UPS or the likes.
