What you're hearing is called "pre-echo." I've seen two explanations advanced for it. The first is transfer from the neighboring layer of tape in the master reel, as HanryH suggested. The second possibility is that the record was cut without enough spacing between the grooves, so that the next inner groove distorts the groove to it's outside.
