Have you looked inside the box ? It could be something visible or measurable. Or even just a duff connection or a dry solder joint. Capacitors tend to show visible signs of malfunction, as do resistors. Transistors are trickier but also more robust and less likely to fail.
Open the box and bomb it with inhibisol or another circuit cleaner and go over it with a magnifying glass. If it bulges or its black, thats your man. And if theres nothing that stands out, check the wires + solder joints in the plugs. 9 times out of ten its the flaming connections.
I hate it when things go phut like that and I wish you the best of luck.
Alternatively, Rhea do a nice one with remote control loading and gain and it makes the tea. *sigh*
