Using DVD-+R for High Res Transfer Storage/Playback

Hi -- I am pretty psyched about learning to use DVD+R DVD+RW media. It offers more storage than CD-R, and with the right software, you can create high resolution files for regular DVD playback(not DVD-Audio).

Pristine Classical is offering high res flac files for download and offers some useful information and links about FLACs and burning 24 bit files to DVD.

**They also mention a v. handy shareware program, Audio-DVD-Creator which enables you to take a set of WAV files and burn a DVD playable in most DVD players. It is pretty easy to use. Once I figured out which type of DVD R (Dash or Plue) blank I needed for my particular recorder on my PC, it was easy to take some of the high resolution LP Transfer files from my computer and create a DVD.

I burned 1 DVD so far using 16bit/48kbps files. Next I will try a higher resolution 24/96. I am using my Sony DVP-S7700 for playback. I don't have an outboard DAC. Even though this older DVD player does not sound as good as my CD player, I can hear the difference the high res files makes.

The Sony DVP-S7700 has a 24/96 internal DAC. Obviously an external DAC would sweeten the output a great deal, but even without it, this may be a way I can enjoy the high resolution LP transfers I make. I can play high resolution files on my Alesis Masterlink Harddisc CD recorder, but I tend to only keep current projects on the hard drive.

Of course it is more fun the play my LPS, they sound best. But, there are times when I can't play LPs - I am cooking, busy with something, have guests . . . - and I find digital playback more convenient. Also some transfers I make for friends, I don't actually own the LP -- etc. So I am happy to figure out a way to play back the high res. files of the LP transfers I make.

I thought folks here might be interested in the shareware program and this method for archiving lps.

Any advice from folks already doing this sort of thing ??
Or problems with this method or limitations of the DVD (digital video) format??

Stephanie
