I ordered some Van den Hull cartridge tags about 3 years ago which I plucked up the courage to solder onto the silver wired rega today with silver solder. Then I swapped the Benz Ace for the AT OC10 that I have been saving. Then I fiddled around for a couple of hours aligning it. Then I set the tracking force properly with a digital scale I recently acquired. This time I put a 0.5 mm thin layer of dense foam in between the cartridge and the headshell just as an experiment. Then I listened.
It could be the improved electrical contact with the new tags. It could be the improved mechanical interface between cartridge and headshell. It could be that I am getting better at stylus alignment. Or it could be that I set the tracking force properly. Or maybe the OC10 is just better than the Ace. But one thing is for sure. It sounds amazing.
Aerial by Kate Bush has always been a bit of an acid test for setting up but this time there was no tracing distortion towards the end of each disc. And then I tried the cinematic orchestra live in the Albert Hall. Wow.
I am one happy camper. Decidedly, there is no substitute for patience, a little experience and the right tools. And a little general knowledge from VA of course.
best regards,
rr
