I'm thinking he meant a data CD not a redbook CD.

"I don't believe an LP contains the equivalent of 24 bit+ information. The reason is that more bit depth gives you more signal to noise, a place where the LP does not excel."

Interesting thoughts. First of all be careful about apples to oranges comparisons as in this case you compare sound pressure level SNR to electrical SNR. Second, LP is analog...meaning it contains infinite word depths worth of info. I think the relevant point you are getting to in your thinking is: what bit depth is necessary to be granular enough to fool humans? For example: if we say since a good vinyl rig can only pull off 80dB SNR at the listeners position do we only want an 80dB DAC to reproduce it with? If 1dB steps are the granularity necessary to fool humans into hearing smooth transitions as we ramp up or down the signal level then yes 80dB worth of DAC resolution is plenty. However I suspect that humans may be able to hear more resolution than 1dB steps and one dB steps may seem harsh and stair steppy.

I honestly can't say what the true threshold of audibility is between steps but I can say that I suspect the whole 16 bit idea is probably more representative of what technology Sony thought users would be willing to pay for to get CD's way back in the early eighties when CD was being developed. I'm going with more bits is better but then again I haven't any supporting data other than my feelings about the subject.

Edit:

When I said:

"For example: if we say since a good vinyl rig can only pull off 80dB SNR at the listeners position do we only want an 80dB DAC to reproduce it with?"

Hopefully it was obvious that instead of "at the listeners position" I should have said "the the loudest recorded signal level to be reproduced / divided by a dead silent passages signal level"

What I actually said was idiotic. I see that now.
