When I machined the thrust surface bearing flat this caused the top of the idler wheel to drag on the inside bottom side of the platter. I could actually see drag marks.I just used a taller ball to re-establish the clearance I needed.
Buy a silicone nitride ball from either Boca Bearings or Mc Master. Do not wait a year to do so like I did. Mosin said he had tried it and liked it and I sat on this golden egg for a full year.
The change in the noise floor is impressive. By that I mean I can hear quiet around each instrument and there is a reduction of the white noise that seems to make things sound homogenated.
I have CDR copies of the same music with only a change in the steel ball to a silicone nitride ball and everyone can hear the difference as clear as a bell.
Hope your issue is just interference. This is the easiest thing to overcome.
