and haven't regretted it. AS others have said, the Technics is a good 'table for the value. I sold my VPI HW-19 series TT when I picked up the used SL1200 via Craigslist. A couple of things to consider if buying used, however:
* If it's been used for DJing, be very careful. I've personally seen these guys doing some pretty poor packing as they drag them around from venue to venue. As a matter of fact, if the seller admits to having used in 'on the road', just pass.
* Even if you can determine if its been used for DJing, ensure that the bearing points and the all the gimbal mount points on the tonearm are intact and do not appear to have sustained whacks or other hits of some sort. Chips or dings anywhere around the tonearm are dead giveaways.
* Check the platter for balance and level-ness. That is, get it spinning and see if there's any evidence that its been dropped or has become bent in some way. Same goes for the spindle that it mounts onto. It should spin smoothly and without grinding or with any play in the bearing system.
* If the dust cover is important to you, then also inspect it to ensure that the hinges are there and that it is in good shape. Many will be cracked or have spider-leg fractures if abused.
If all this sort of inspection causes you to get more nervous about the SL1200 in used form, then by all means purchase new. Either way, I can attest to it being a good value for the investment. I use mine with either a Denon DL-103R or Stanton 681EEE cart.
Cheers,
David
