1. Motor cooling, how to accomplish some degree of ventilation for motor without sacrificing mass and quietness in motor area.
- make sure air can enter from below as JD said
2. Has anyone added some foil or similar between layers to provide shielding? I would like to have phono section/pre on a shelf below the plinth.
- again, as JD said, shouldn't be needed, I have never done this myself and I have no problems with my phono section.
3. What kind of leg set-ups are folk coming up with? I was thinking 3-legs (for leveling) with cup-and-ball mounting for dampening from 3ish Hz and down.
I use 3 speaker spikes, a type that allows leveling, and is plated with gold - looks nice. These have a metal disk for the spike to sit on. These I place under the plinth, on a board, that may be further isolated from the rack (I have tried varios rubber isolators etc, not sure what is best - minimal difference I suspect). From top down then it's turntable bolted to heavy CLD plinth, 3 metal spikes on metal disks, heavy base board, rubber isolators (optional?), then the rack.
4. I'm adding a step down trans for dropping motor voltage, where should this be located, on the floor, a shelf, doesn't matter, etc.?
If it's not well shielded, keep it well away from low level signals. It may also generate vibration and sound, especially if a cheap type. I'd put it near the wall outlet, and run normal mains cable to the table (shielded if you feel the need).
