It depends on your tonearm's effective length....

Baerwald null-points are based on minimizing and equalizing the peaks of the weighted tracking error curve in-between the innermost and outermost grooves. However, the null-points change slightly depending on a tonearm's effective length. For example, taking the innermost and outermost groove to be 60.325-mm and 146.05-mm respectively, a 229-mm tonearm will have null-points of 65.974-mm and 121.052-mm. On the other hand, a tonearm with 237-mm effective length will have null-points of 65.976-mm and 121.039-mm. Furthermore, a long tonearm with 305-mm effective length will have null-points of 65.986-mm and 120.975-mm.

Baerwald's equations yield the same null-points of 65.998-mm and 120.891-mm regardless of a tonearm's effective length because Baerwald made an approximation in order to develop simple, straight-forward equations. However, with modern computers it is not necessary to make that approximation and it can be shown that the null-points change very slightly with tonearm effective length. Therefore, I always specify Baerwald's null-point to be 66.0-mm and 121.0-mm.

Best regards,
John Elison
