Need good all-around arm for experiments...need SME 3009 advice/info

I'm going to be experimenting with some old idler wheel drive turntables. Therefore, I'm going to have to purchase a good all-around arm that I can use. I've thought about Linn arms...don't want Rega....but what else? I think probably I'll get the SME 3009, but I have questions:

1) Which is the best version to get of the Series II? The first version or the Improved?

2) What are the various iterations of this arm?

3) How do I avoid buying a lemon? What parts fail and what to check for?
