And rightly so. Most of the Simply Vinyl issues are marginal at best. However, 'Hell Freezes Over' is very much the exception. It is excellent. I use the opening of the acoustic version of 'Hotel California' as a reference when evaluating equipment.
I suspect that the quality of individual SV releases was very much a function of the original label's engineers. The Eagles, for example, recorded on Asylum, which I consider to have been one of the very best for rock/pop. On the other hand, SV reissued a bunch of Columbias, and the multi-miked, compressed crap just shines on through. I've never been so disappointed as I was with their version of 'The Graduate'.
