Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with a man who runs one of the few audiophile shops in Amsterdam, and who has known Van den Hul personally for a very long time. I asked whether he sold any wet cleaning brushes or supplies, and he said, "No, nor do I recommend using wet cleaning, as it can harm your records." The upshot of his argument runs as follows- Thorough wet cleaning removes a thermally protective film (the release agent?) which then potentialy results in the very hot stylus deforming the groove. For a very dirty record where dry cleaning is inadequate, he suggested, a cleaning solution should be used which chemically replaces this thermally insulating film. Now, I am sure this will result in some interesting responses. Being a rank neophyte, I am myself curious to hear what people think of this- it is certainly the first time I have heard such an argument against thorough cleaning of vinyl.
