I did considerable searches on the forum on this topic. I finally decided to go with Doug Deacon's suggestion of holographic mylar. Its just a clear multi-colored form with high strength. I found a so-called "party curtain" at a Parties-To-Go store. This thing cost $7 and gave me about 300 strands to deal with. They are 1/4 inch in width but I could have gotten thinner or wider types. You'll have to experiment with different lengths - you don't want it too tight or it will screw your motor bearings; too lose and it moves on the pulley. I always give my platter a shove prior to turning on the motor to help it out.I believe you must use audio splicing tape to hold the ends together. I tried super-glue and scotch tape - it broke after 2 hours of use.
If you use audio tape, keep the oxide side out. Otherwise, it sloughs off into the motor.
