In addition to the tweaks on your list, try replacing the stock feet with Sorbothane feet. That made a big difference for me - much cleaner sounding at the same and louder volumes.I've also found the Sumiko HS-12 headshell - the one with azimuth adjustment capability - to be a nice upgrade too. I use a thin mirror (about the same thickness of an LP, placed directly on the mat) to set the azimuth, so that when looking from the front, the cantilever appears to rise straight up from the mirror surface. Better tracking and lower groove noise have been the result.
The results from these two tweaks have not been all that subtle either. I made some before and after comparison recordings on my PC and have been quite satisfied. I've found a record clamp to be very helpful as well.
