I really love re-discovering these Steeplechase recordings of Chet playing in Europe late in his career.Just an amazing sound on this live recording. It was recorded live at Montmartre, Copenhagen, on October 4, 1979.
Side two opens with "Love for Sale." Jammin' bassline, very boppy, Davis-esque, unmuted trumpet. I really get a kick out of the finger-snapping in the background and the clink of glasses between tracks.
"This is Always" features a close-mic'ed, marble-y mouthed Chet, still with that smooth Mel Torme voice. It's amazing to contrast that voice with his aged, bespectacled face on the cover.
Highest recommendation, if you're looking for a good Chet Baker.
