There are advantages to both types of stylii - I think it may come down to your preferences. Like any technology each has relative strengths.

From my experience I prefer my conical 103R on less than pristine LP's from thrift stores, etc. Far less energy from pops, ticks and general surface noise. Plus, it's (relatively) easy to set up and forget.

The phase thing may be real - I've found my shibata'd 103R is very sensitve to proper alignment with respect to the groove. This is not a ding against the shibata, just a fact of using a more line contact stylus.

For me it's a tie, with the shibata's 103R opening up a whole new world of low level detail and airy highs, but being much more difficult to live with on a day-to-day basis. The stock 103R is a snap to set up and really cuts the pops and ticks on used vinyl.

Won't say one is better than the other - different horses for different courses.

That said I'm seriously considering getting my Decca Gold retipped with a conical stylus - it should make it almost liveable as a daily listening cart.
