JohnUnfortunately despite being Diamonds the incredible amount of force applied to the microscopic area of the stylus foot print and the resultant friction and heat they do indeed wear a cheap SDisco Conical may have a life expectancy of 200 hr's the OM 10 Elliptical
I'd assume would have about an 800 hr lifespan properly cleaned records and stylus hygiene may extend that 150 hr's.At any rate once a Stylus is worn out they become destructive to the vinyl groove, worn Styli are all destructive period, the degree of destructiveness depends on the Stylus configuration it's quality and the degree of care that went into polishing and mounting it.
Some stylus configurations when sufficiently worn are just like the the cutting tool in a lathe and in just a couple of plays will have
effectively removed most or avan all of the records life and dynamic
qualities all the HF's etc..The only reliable and safe stylus replacement policy is replacement based on operating hours, a cheap ($5 ? or less, punch it once every side you play) golf stroke counter works great.
Waiting for audible sounds of wear is not real slick, as a totally shot cartridge may not sound like anything and what you're actually hearing is your now toasted records.
