Hold on a minute. Although mastering makes a BIG difference, the digital process still leaves a little to desire.

As one of the original engineers involved with what led to redbook digital, my main complaints center around 1.it's finite dynamic reference points which severely limits it's usable range, and 2.the apparent lack of resolution within it's harmonic structure.

The lack of resolution is most likely do to the "throwing-away" of the recordings least significant bits.

Ofcourse, it's plagued with other problems as well. We will need a better understanding of what works and what doesn't in the digital domain if we are to have any real hope of improving it.
