Re: The room we are in is the "Vinyl Asylum" and Vinyl is an analog format.

I have to agree, 'digiphiles' can be extraodinarily obnoxious in their attempts at 'rationalizing' the 'triumph' of CD and the (almost) killing off of analogue/vinyl disc.

In the 80's I was living in Bath, Wiltshire, in 1987 I bought a nice Systemdek/Rega/Nagaoka MP-11 Boron rig.

Apart from the usual 'Our Price' and what-have-you's, there were several good independent outlets for vinyl in Bath, and life was good - LP's were half the price of CD's and most of the music I listened to was avaialble on the venerable format.

One of these shops was a quite well-known indepedent jazz record shop in Broad Street, a 5-minute walk form where I was living.

The proprieter unilaterily decided, also in 1987, to cease stocking vinyl completely. I found this out from a young sales assistant when I was in the shop one day that year, and we chatted about the virtues or otherwise of LP and CD for a few minutes.

It transpired the owner was in ear-shot (he was a cardigan-clad, bespectacled guy not far off retirement age), and quite abrubtly he appeared and harangued me (in fact, practically shouted) about how I was "talking though my hat", having decided (I assume) that I was leading his young employee astray.

'Defensive' would be understating his bizarre outburst. I came to realize it was because he knew (but wouldn't admit to himself or anyone else) that the reason he was getting into bed with the 'industry', and assisting in killing off vinyl-disc in spite of continuing demand, had more to do with the 'bottom line' than anything else.

So LP almost (but not quite) bit the dust, but we still put up with these 'objectivists' who extoll the wonders of digital (and the inadequacy of vinyl) as if it were a veritable gift from the God's. Many of these people, I believe, have never heard a 'proper' analogue source in their lives.

It's a bit like listening to a member of the VW Golf owners-club telling us that the Golf is the best car ever made (and who would argue that it's not a fine car?), when what they mean is, it's the best they've actually driven.
