Yep.Metal needs to be degreased before it can be successfully coated with a finish, and in truly professional grade these solvents are pretty tough. Without this, humidity etc can easily break the bond between the metal and finish. One could probably have an auto body shop do it--or if it was me I'd use a musical instrument refinisher (the local HS band director could identify the best local person), who could degrease it and then spray it with whatever one likes in a controlled environment. That person might charge less than the can of stuff cost, and could be very well worth it.
As you note below a coat of real furniture-grade wax works beautifully, and that's what I use. It doesn't hold up like a lacquer or other synethetic material of course but I waxed my Thorens platter about a year ago and it still looks good.
