The sound quality can vary from record to record as much as the difference between the sound of my present system and that of my original system 45 years ago. It is a minority of records that really have fine sound, but of course you are right: it's the music that counts. I have rarely bought records on the basis of their sound quality. For example, I regularly thoroughly enjoy listening to Schnabel play Beethoven sonatas, and I can be drawn into his playing as much as the music on any record, regardless of sound. Of course, excellent sound and a great performance is all that much better.Joe
