The biggest differences I have found . . .

. . . as far as enjoyment factor have resulted from changing the preamplifier.

In my HT system, when I went from a Sherwood Newcastle pre/pro to a Rotel RSP1060 the difference was night and day, probably because the Sherwood digitized the analog inputs and the Rotel does not.

In my 2 channel system I considered exchanging my CJ Premieur 17LS for a lower end Classe preamp (because I was - and still am - annoyed by the relatively loud lowest setting and occasional energy surge from the CJ). The home audition made me decide to keep the CJ. Night and day difference.

As far as speakers, they may make the biggest difference, but what sounds good versus bad is so subjective that I don't see it as an easy difference to quantify, whereas no one would have picked the Sherwood over the Rotel or the Classe over the CJ, at least not in my systems.
