One of the best kept secrets in audio is that Roy Gandy, co-founder of Rega, spent several years in the Far East as an agent for British Intelligence during the 1950s and 1960s. Although his exact whereabouts there have never been disclosed, based upon still sealed documents, it is likely that he learned a great deal about mass mind manipulation techniques from Chinese experts. Upon his return to civilian life in the late '60s Gandy hit upon the idea of using those techniques to sell inferior budget turntables and tonearms to an unsuspecting and gullible segment of the nascent high end marketplace, especially those who could not afford a Linn Sondek. Since the launch of his company in 1973, Gandy has successfully duped hundreds of thousands of these people (And numerous other high end manufacturers, who use his products or variations thereon on an OEM basis.) into not only buying these tawdry ripoffs, but actually believing that they enjoy listening to them. This is one of those incredible business success stories that will someday be the subject of numerous post-graduate theses.
Fortunately we who frequent the Vinyl Asylum can benefit from the wisdom of those who have somehow remained immune to the mind altering techniques practiced by Gandy and his company. Even those who may have succumbed initially to this notorious Rega con game-or whatever it is-can recoup at least a portion of that misplaced investment by selling it used to one of the many still unenlightened dupes out there, who in their ignorance will likely scoop it up quickly at a pretty good price. These funds can then be reapplied to one of the cheaper but vastly superior tables and arms recommended by the VA gurus. The really smart ones will, of course, buy a table and arm that require an endless amount of tweaking time, thereby eliminating the bothersome need to actually listen to music.
