Re: Fred you point out my current limitation in BOLD CAPS.....

Tubes

Refresh my memory was the The Precision Fidelity C7 preamp a meltdown (catastrophic failure) or was it a victim of the fire ?
or simply something you shouldn't have traded or sold ?

I don't know if I ever mentioned this ? but I actually have the gift of 20/20 Hindsight ;-)

A few years back my personal Audio / Audiophile Guru fellow Inmates Kloss had been telling me how great serious Stages were,
particularly Serious Tube Stages, at that time i had an Audio Alchemy
VAC with the upgrade PS, as well as the Phono Section in my old retired (except for the Phono Section) Adcom 555 Pre.
I normally defer to John's (Kloss)Vast Knowledge and experience base, but had always been quite cynical about the nose bleed High end stuff.
He had a Korato Anniversary Tube Stage a mutual dealer friend had picked up in Europe ($ 2,200.) but he'd upgraded to some $10K Stage
and the Korato had developed a few minor issue, John said I could borrow it and if I liked it I could have it for $700, the $2,200
retail seemed preposterous / ridiculous to me at the time and even $700 seemed like lot more than I'd sink into a Stage at least until
I had a fairly serious table/arm/cartridge.
The Korato turned out to have a bad tube, and a cracked RCA output
jack once those glitches were addressed I threw on Graham Nash " Wild Tales" that I'm on a truly intimate basis with, sat back in my Barcalounger and it took me almost 2 1/2 minutes to realize just how totally wrong I'd been about fancy tube stages, within the next 30 sec. I knew I absolutely had to have the Korato no matter what.

The differences I was experiencing were awesome imaging, detail retrieval reduction of surface noise sheer Musicality just being sucked right into the Music ! better even than Drugs or wild Hot Monkey sex ;-)

I was running a TD 318 stock low rent Thorens arm jury rigged (weighted)to run an Ortofon X3. At that time I'd have assumed to ever have that kind of sonics and musical engagement, I'd have needed to upgrade to a VPI TNT carrying a $3k MC.

A few months later I did some tube rolling (NOS Brit. Military Tubes) and it just got that much better, I was still literally thrilled, ever since then any changes or upgrades (system or front) end are so apparenta and it amounted seeming as if I had a new record collection as there was so much previously hidden detail contained within even my most familiar old favorites and I remain am
a Phono Stage true believer.

Regards Ferd
