Re: vintage vs. modern TT/tonearms with $2.5K+ modern TTs

In my limited experience, vintage tts are better and more fun. I've given up a Linn Sondek for, first, a Thorens 124 and SME 3012 and then a modified (damped and properly suspended) Thorens 125 and Hadcock 242 with a Dynavector Karat D17 2. The 125 is miles better than the Linn in all respects, and better than the 124 in detail. It also cost me nothing (a friend gave it to me, although I bought the arm and cartridge). I have no idea how much very top end modern tts cost. They're probably better than the 125, but it gives me an enormous amount of pleasure. The modifications (suggested in a Hi-Fi World article) transformed the tt.
